Bluebell links HD and SD cameras at Scottish Wildlife Trust
Bluebell has supplied a range of fibre optic interfaces to the latest Scottish Wildlife Trust (SWT) project to transmit full broadcast quality pictures of rare nesting birds of prey for recording and live internet streaming.
An initial system to cover a Peregrine Falcon nest at New Lanark was supplied early this year. Several fibre optic links transmit SDI with embedded audio, composite video and analogue audio as well as data and ethernet signals.
A second system has also been deployed to capture, record and display images in full HD of a rare and protected Osprey nest, near Dunkeld. The live pictures and audio are fed over singlemode fibres to the local Visitor Centre and displayed on large HD monitors with a streaming feed being used to relay the 4 month breeding cycle live onto the internet. Archive footage is also being recorded in full HD for potential terrestrial broadcast later. An RS232 return data link over the same multicore fibre cable provides full PZT control of the remote HD camera without disturbing the nesting birds.
The signals are being relayed over military grade multicore tactical fibres from the remote nesting sites to a central recording area up to 2.5km away.
The equipment was supplied through local broadcast partner Mitcorp Scotland, part of the CVP-Mitcorp Group which is the UK’s largest broadcast and professional equipment solution provider.
The HD Web cam project was designed and installed by SWT staff under a very tight timescale – as the Osprey nests are protected by law all installation and testing had to be completed before the birds returned from their migration in the Gambia. Funding for the new system was provided by long term supporter Chevron Upsteam Europe.
